Taking anti-malaria tablets

Take the right tablets for the area you are going to.

Start your tablets before entering a malaria area. This may be a few days or up to 10 days before.

Take the tablets absolutely regularly, preferably with or after a meal.

Continue to take them for 4 weeks after leaving the malaria area.

This period is reduced to 7 days for Malarone and atovaquone/proguanil.

No anti-malaria tablet is 100% effective.

Atovaquone 62.5mg/Proguanil 25mg (Generic Malarone Paediatric Tablets)

Atovaquone & Proguanil paediatric tablets are generic Malarone paediatric tablets as they contain the same active ingredients in the same strength and have been released after the patent for Malarone tablets had expired.

Atovaquone 250mg/Proguanil 100mg (Generic Malarone Tablets)

Atovaquone & Proguanil tablets are generic Malarone tablets as they contain the same active ingredients as Malarone tablets in the same strength and have been released after the patent for Malarone had expired.

Lariam Tablets

Lariam 250mg anti malaria tablets dosage information – ONE WEEKLY – preferably two to three weeks before travel, during and for four weeks on return from malarious area.

Not recommended in epilepsy or experiencing fits or seizures, psychiatric illness including depression if being treated.

In the first three months of pregnancy or if breast feeding. If you are about to undertake tasks requiring precision such as scuba-diving, piloting a plane – caution due to dizziness that may be caused by mefloquine.

Doxycycline Capsules

Doxycycline capsules dosage information – ONE DAILY – At least two days (7 days if not taken previously) before entering a malaria area, during and for four weeks on leaving.

Not recommended in pregnancy or if breast feeding

For children under 12 years of age.

May sensitise the skin to sunlight. Can be taken for up to two years.

Paludrine and Avloclor Travel Pack

(Contains Proguanil 100mg tablets & Chloroquine phosphate 250mg tablets)

Paludrine & Avloclor anti malaria travel pack dosage – Take one week before entering the malaria area, during and for four weeks on leaving.

Each strip of tablets equals one week of medication and consists of two tablets of chloroquine and 14 tablets of proguanil in a calender pack for easy use.

Cautions in use – as above for individual components i.e. Proguanil and Chloroquine.

Can be taken for periods exceeding five years.

Paludrine Tablets

Paludrine anti malaria tablets dosage –

Two tablets daily for age 13 years and over. Start one week before entering malaria area, during and for four weeks on leaving.

Not recommended – in severe renal failure

Safe in pregnancy but a folate supplement recommended

Caution – in use if taking anti-coagulants – may alter dosage.

Can be taken for periods exceeding five years.

Avloclor Tablets

(Contains Chloroquine Phosphate 250mg per tablet)

Avloclor anti malaria tablets dosage – Two tablets weekly for age 13 years and over.

Start one week before entering a malaria area, during and for four weeks on leaving. Not recommended in epilepsy or psoriasis.

Can be taken for periods exceeding five years.
