Birdsfoot Lane Pharmacy - Your health is our priority

Blood Pressure Service Luton

It is essential that you are aware of the risks associated with high blood pressure (hypertension) and the ways in which your blood pressure can be reduced to avoid the problems which may occur.

One in three adults in the UK are affected by high blood pressure which can lead to strokes, heart problems and damaged vital organs.

Birdsfoot Lane Pharmacy provide a private consultation service to test your blood pressure and offer help and advice to enable you to manage it properly.

If you wish to find out about whether you have high blood pressure (hypertension) you will need to have your blood pressure checked. Our blood pressure testing service saves you the need to arrange for a blood pressure test with your GP and also frees up your GP's time.

Birdsfoot Pharmacy also offer a range of home test kits for blood pressure testing and also offer a blood pressure testing service within the private consultation room at our pharmacy.

Blood pressure should be checked on a regular basis (once a year) if you are at increased risk from high blood pressure and people over 40 should be checked for high blood pressure once every five years.

Easy ways to reduce your blood pressure.

● Drink sensibly No more than 3 to 4 units of alcohol a day for men and 2 to 3 for women.

● Exercise regularly. Try to do 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week.

● Eat sensibly At least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day and reduce salt and saturated fat intake.

● Be the right weight. Ask for our weight loss dietservice, from the Pharmacy.

● Also, reduce stress, stop smoking, and monitor your blood pressure at home on a regular basis.

Can I get a blood pressure monitor on the NHS?

Blood pressure monitors are not available on the NHS. However, we stock a range of blood pressure monitors at the Birdsfoot Pharmacy and can show you how to use them.

What reading should I be aiming for?

Ideally it should be below 140/90mmHg. As blood pressure varies in everybody, there will always be one or two readings when your blood pressure will be higher, so take it again when you are feeling more relaxed. Keep a record of your readings. If you find that your blood pressure stays higher than usual, it’s important to see your doctor or nurse, taking the measurements with you.

Causes of high blood pressure:

● Hereditary factors
● Unhealthy diet
● Heavy drinking or smoking
● Lack of exercise
● Stress
